Gutters were said to have been invented during the Bronze Age, around 2000 or 3000 BC in south Asia, and were constructed with bricks made out of burnt clay. Without a gutter, a curtain of rainfall would pour off the edge of the roof and cause serious long-term damage to foundations.
Gutters became more useful, popular, and a turning point developed when the Romans brought the technology to Europe. The introduction of stone roofs and parapets led to their widespread use in the 18th century and gargoyles (and other such creatures) were used at the corners of the roofs to push the water away from the structure through their spouts.
Gutters were alternately made out of lead, cast iron, wood, galvanized steel, and ultimately, aluminum. In the last half-century, the gutter machine was invented to roll a coil of aluminum through a series of rollers to shape the gutter and run them out to the desired length.
Gutters are a necessary component of your home’s design. Without an effective gutter system, a curtain of rainfall will fall from your roof to the soil around your foundation. This can cause the soil to wash out and compromise the integrity of your foundation.
Over the years, we’ve seen major foundation damage that costs thousands of dollars to fix that could have been prevented with an affordable gutter system.
The entire design of a gutter system is important, not just the gutters on your roof. The job of the system is to transfer rainwater from your roof to the ground away from the foundation where it can do the damage.
When we install a new gutter system, our goal is to make it blend into the structure, and not stand out like an eyesore.
